The sample edit is free. It enables me to establish the level of editing required, estimate how long (in hours) the whole project will take, and provide you with an example of my work.

I now ask for the first and last chapter of your manuscript, to read through, plus a random chapter for the sample edit. The length of the sample edit will vary, but the minimum word count will be no less than 1,000 words.

I return the completed sample within 3–5 working days. You will receive two files: one showing the corrections made to the text (known as ‘markup’) along with any comments and queries I have raised. The other file is a ‘clean’ version with all corrections made. (I use Microsoft Word to carry out the editing, using a feature known as Track Changes.)

Along with the sample, I provide a quote for the whole document.  There is no obligation from you at this stage.

If you decide to go ahead, I shall raise a proforma invoice. Our contract is binding once you have paid the deposit. However, if you choose not to go ahead, please let me know as soon as possible so I can delete your files and close your enquiry.

To proceed with the sample edit, please complete the enquiry form on the About page, quoting ‘Sample Edit’ in the Subject field before filling in the rest of the form. I can then respond with the appropriate instructions.

(I do not offer a sample edit of one-off short stories, or where they appear in anthologies by multiple writers.)
