The sample edit is free. It enables me to establish the level of editing required, estimate how long (in hours) the whole project will take, and provide you with an example of my work.

There are a couple of ways for me to edit the sample text. Either you can send me the whole novel, from which I choose a random chapter, or you can send me one chapter of my choosing. The length of the sample edit will vary, but the minimum word count is 1,000 words.  (Generally, I do not offer a sample edit for short stories.)

I try to return the completed sample within five working days of receipt. You will receive two files: one showing the corrections made to the text (known as ‘markup’) along with any comments and queries I have raised. The other file is a ‘clean’ version with all corrections made. (I use Microsoft Word to carry out the editing, using a feature known as Track Changes.) Along with the sample, I provide a quote for the whole document, but there is no obligation from you at this stage.

If you choose not to go ahead, I shall delete any files that you have sent me and close your enquiry. If you decide to go ahead, I shall raise a pro forma invoice setting out the fee and details of the edit. Our contract is binding once you have paid the deposit.

To proceed with the sample edit, please complete the enquiry form on the About page, quoting ‘Sample Edit’ in the Subject field before filling in the rest of the form. I can then respond with the appropriate instructions.
