Editing: both the structural edit and the copy-editing are now charged at a fixed fee of £5.00 per 1000 words, respectively.
For example, a 50,000-word novel will cost £500.00 for both the structural edit and the copy-editing. (There is a minimum charge of £10.00 for short stories.)
You do not have to commit to the structural edit and the copy-editing at the same time, but if I have carried out just the structural edit, your typescript will still need copy-editing. For example, after the structural edit, you may wish to make revisions to your typescript before booking it in for copy-editing.
2) Proofreading: To proofread a professionally edited document, either formatted for self-publishing or professionally typeset, my fee is £4.00 per 1000 words (minimum charge of £10.00).
How is the fee set?
The fee is based on the word count of the document; however, the sample edit provides me with an estimate of how many hours it will take to complete the whole typescript. This can only ever be an estimate as, during the edit, I may pick up issues that were not obvious from the sample. If it looks as if the work will take considerably longer than my estimated number of hours, I shall contact you to explain the situation, as this may mean negotiating an additional fee.
When and how do I pay?
With novels or anthologies, half of the total amount is payable before the work is to commence, with the remainder becoming payable just prior to completion. For shorter pieces, full payment is required at the outset. Payment can be made by cheque or electronically via Internet Banking. I accept PayPal only as a last resort.
